on

For most of us, our daily routine involves staring at the computer screen for extended hours. This applies to tablets, smartphones, and TVs, as they are part of the modern-day digital transformation.

In the end, our eyes bear the brunt of this lifestyle, and the worst part is that we often ignore the signs of trouble. Those nagging headaches and watering eyes are common indicators of eye problems, but we are not always keen.

Well, today, we shall give you five simple tips that you can follow to turn around your eye health.

You’re welcome!

Lifestyle Changes to Improve Your Eye Health

Here now are some straightforward pointers that you could follow to boost your eye health. As you will see, they are pretty basic, and you may wonder why you didn’t figure them out earlier.

  1. I) Drink a Lot of Water

Here, we suggest that you drink between six to eight glasses of water per day. When you drink this much water, it slows down the growth of cataracts, and in the end, you will have better vision.

Most of all, your eyes will be moister, cleaner, and healthier.

  1. II) Take a Break from Digital Screens

By now, you must know that staring at computers, smartphones, or TVs for long periods can be tiresome for your eyes. For this reason, it is vital that you take regular breaks from them.

If you are having trouble with taking breaks, we shall provide you with a simple rule that you could try and follow. This is known as the 20-20-20 rule, which proposes that after every 20 minutes, look 20-feet away from the screen for about 20 seconds.

Simple, isn’t it?

III) Eating Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

One common problem that may plague your eyes is nutritional deficiencies, and you can combat it by adding fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Some fruits, such as berries, are packed with antioxidants that either stop or slow down diseases from setting base in your body.

  1. IV) Use UV-Protected Eyeglasses

It has been established that when your eyes are exposed to the unforgiving UV rays of the sun, they could be prone to damage. Some of the issues that the rays could bring about include macular degeneration and cataracts.

In this instance, UV-protected sunglasses could be your handy companion.

  1. V) Stop Smoking!

You may not know this, but smoking increases the risk of eye diseases. According to various reports, smoking is one of the leading causes of cataracts, and this should encourage you to stop the habit.

We have just given you one more reason to quit smoking for a healthier lifestyle.

Common Eye Exercises

Besides making lifestyle changes, there are several exercises that you could engage in to keep your eye muscles healthy. The great thing is that they only require a few minutes of your day to strengthen the muscles at the back of your eyes.

They include:

*Palming

This procedure involves rubbing the palms against each other and cupping the palms on the closed eyelids. It borrows its cue from yoga and helps in soothing the eyeballs and releasing stress.

The idea is to warm up your eyeballs without exerting excessive pressure on them.

*Pendulum Exercise

Next up is an exercise that works on your eyes’ oblique muscles and helps sharpen the lenses’ focus. Here, you will have to focus on the pendulum and follow its movement by shifting the eye’s focus side-to-side.

*Zooming

This exercise involves lengthening your arm to your ideal stretch and maintaining the thumb in a hitchhiking position. Focus on the thumb while your hand is fully stretched, and then bring the thumb closer while keeping your focus on it (thumb).

Only stop focusing when the thumb is about 3-inches away from your eyes. If you repeat this exercise thrice a week, you will eventually get the results you are looking for.

Closing Remark

As you have seen, our daily practices have a significant effect on our eye’s health. So, we should strive to minimize or cut off the habits that could end up harming our eyesight.

An important aspect that we should never ignore is the diet which provides the required nutrients for better eye health. We also advise you to pay attention to the simple exercises we have suggested to strengthen the eye muscles and remain that way into your sunset years.
